Social Structure
The Athens had a democracy. A democracy is a government made for the people by the people, this basically means that everyone could be apart of the government. However, the Athens only let free men be citizens. Men that were over the age of 18 who were born in Athens were considered Athenian citizens. This excluded women and slaves as well. Every citizen could take part in their government. In this government there was a large group of 500 men called the Council that met every day. Every year names of men ,over the age of 30, were collected and 500 of the names were chosen. The day-to-day business of government was run by the Council, and they also suggested new laws. There was another group of citizens called the Assembly. The Assembly proposed laws that had to be accepted by this group. At least 6,000 citizens had to be at the meeting in order for it to take place. If there wasn’t enough people present then slaves would round up men, and put some red paint on their clothes. In Ancient Greece this was considered punishment because men were embarrassed to have red on their shirts. At these meetings every citizen had the right to speak, but some speakers had better skills then others. Most of the men enjoyed having a right to take part in the government, and they enjoyed debating issues.
