Greek Mathematics
The Greeks loved reasoning and looking for logical answers. A famous scientist in Ancient Greece was called Pythagoras. He believed that numbers were a key to understanding nature. He so strongly believed in math and science that he opened a school where students were able to develop mathematical theories. Pythagoras was fascinated in geometry, like many other Greeks. Geometry means “to measure land”. It started as a system for measuring areas of land. The Greeks took what the Egyptians discovered and developed it into greater and new methods. Pythagoras came up with a theory of A^2 + B^2= C^2. Another famous mathematician was Euclid. He made a textbook that became the basis of teaching math for more than 2,000 years. Greece had the first woman to become a mathematician. Her name was Hypatia. She taught Greek philosophy and mathematics in the city of Alexandria. We still use the Pythagorean Theorem is today to find the long side of the triangle. We still use many of the math and geography theories today.
